E303 cam and idle?

Picked up an 89 LX 5.0 that is supposed to have a 303 cam and no other mods, other than exhaust and K&N. The idle isnt the best but of primary concern is the lack of a fast idle when cold. What should I look for to correct this?

What kind of idle should I expect to achieve with this cam?

303? there are several ford cams w/ "303" in them.

guessing its an E since they're really common and have been around forever

You can take a voltmeter and put it to 2 wires going into your TPS, it should .98. I dont know which color goes with which probe and my car isn't near me so I can't go look. I'll try and see if I can find it.

Does that control the fast idle?

Does it stall when it's cold? When it warms up does it idle ok? If it only idles slow when it's cold and fine when it's warm I wouldn't worry about it.

It does idle ok when warm. The idea of the fast idle when cold is to circulate the oil faster through the engine. About 1200 to 1500 rpm for 20 seconds. They do it stock, what has changed?

Your cold idle is controlled by the "idle air control" valve, often referred to as the IAC. It's the tubular shaped thing with the electrical connector at the bottom mounted on the front side of your throttle body. I had the same problem a while back. I took the IAC off the throttle body and removed the electrical solenoid (held on with two screws) from the bottom. Then I flushed the crap out of the top half with brake clean. Let it dry and now it works like a charm and my cold idle is great. The piston inside the IAC gets gummed up with carbon and other crap over the years. The brake clean will clean all that out and you should be good to go.
