Alright- I just pulled apart my 302- it's a late model, 1pc. rear main seal, 50 oz. balance hydraulic roller piece, carbed, and in an '85 GT with T-tops. My rod bearings are all pitted to hell (it looks like dirt or somesuch got in!), and my pistons are pitted from detonation (the previous owner didn't take great care of it, and I just bought it and am now stuck with his mistakes), so I'm looking to replace the pistons and rods, and was thinking what a great time to stroke it... The motor, I mean...
By the way, my goal is STREETABILITY- it's a daily driver, so I don't need a 550 WHP monster- 300 WHP or so would be more than enough Here's the list so far, though:
Edelbrock Performer 600 electric choke carb
Summit Stage 2 IM
Stock E7 heads- should be getting a little port/bowl work done, CC matched, and decked (if needed)
Comp Magnum cam (440-8), roller lifters, retainers, valve springs (740-16), locks, seals
Valves to be determined by the machine shop, as will pushrods and guideplates, if necessary
2.5" pipes- no cat, no emissions stuff anywhere, really
K&N airfilter- no snorkels
Maybe a few other bits in there that I forgot...
Anyway, I'm on a major time budget (this wasn't really planned- started getting bad noises on decel [rod bearings, I now know] last weekend, and I JUST finished the teardown an hour ago), so I'm on an in-stock, off-the-shelf situation. All help is greatly appreciated! Anyway, onto the meat:
I am looking at stroker kits and rotating assemblies on Summit's website, and everything seems to be 28 oz. balance, and 2-piece rear mains- can I make this work on my car? I'm pretty sure I just need a new harmonic balancer and flywheel, then balance the assembly to 28 oz., right?
Also, any ideas on what's good/what's junk? I'm looking at a basic Scat kit (331 CID), but can be swayed. The problem- I need it yesterday- I'm due to move to NC the beginning of next week, and I have THIS WEEK to machine, re-assemble, re-install, and tune everything. Yeah... I know I'm screwed, so HELP!
Sorry to sound nuts, but it's been a LOOONG week of beating my head against the wall.
Thanks in advance! Mark W.

Sounds like a decent combo except for a few things.... I hate edlebrock carbs. Look for a Holley or something similar design like demon. Also, the 331 sounds perfect for a daily. More then that and the motor will wear out quicker (usually last about 50-60,000 not beating on it). The 28oz is the normal imbalance for a strocker kit but everything should be balanced together by a shop,PRIOR TO FINAL INSTALATION!!!. I caps this because some massaging may be needed to the piston skirts for clearance. Other than that should be a good combination.
Stock E7 heads will choke out long before 300rwhp.
Gotta upgrade those heads or you might as well just build another 306.
Spend the money for stroker kit on a set of AFR 185's or Canfield 190's
and a 306 with good cam can make 300rwhp with those heads

you have one hellofa talk to build a performance motor in a week, good luck with that.
just an FYI, if you use a 28 oz kit and replace the flywheel and balancer you will also need a machine shop to grind the lip off the back of the crank and knock a seal saver on there so you can use it in a one piece rear main seal motor. how do i know this? i have a 289 crank sitting in the back seat of my car right now thats going into the roller 302 block on the stand in my garage [8D]
heads will keep you from 300hp and for TURT saying a stroked moter will only last 50 to 60k is an oppinion not a proven fact. Brothers 393 yes i know its a chevy has over 120k with not a prob. its all in the build of the motor that keeps it alive and how you treat it. A 347 is also a great dd motor (347's got a bad rap due to the old oiling issue's) but they have been fixed and are just as reliable as a 331 306 302.

My favorite part about these forums is reading the negative challenges to everything I say.... I do have some idea what Im talking about but at least you promote people to do a bit more reserch on the subject other than read a couple forum resposes.

this may be true if converting from a 2 piece to a 1 piece rear main seal, or using a 289 crank in a late model (roller) block, but far from the truth if using aftermarket cranks made to be balanced for 28oz.

I'm hardly on here but saying how long an engine is going to last based soley on the amount it's stroked is like talking like a paper ass. Now I have a 347, daily drive it right now 50 miles every day to and from work. I garantee it'll go well past 100,000. It probably has 10,000 on it now but it's def streetable and could be even more radical yet streetable. The fuel injection makes that happen.
Now duke, if you are in a time crunch I'd just rebuild your 302 bottom end and work on the top end and you'll have 300hp.
