Default glowing headers after cam install.

I installed a b-303 cam straight up, but forgot to mark where the rotor was when I took the distributor out, so I thought about it and put the motor to TDC on compression stroke, and point rotor at #1 piston, making sure timing marks lined up on balancer.
I started it up and let it idle at about 2000-2500rpm for about 2-3 mins, then go to check the timing and the headers are glowing red and burned the crap out of the plug wires.

I talked to someone at ford dealership and they told me that the rotor is suppsed to be between 1 and 2 oclock. I set it there and it won't fire, I tried advancing and retarding the distributor a little and it sounded like it wanted to start, but wouldn't.
then I thought he might of meant between 1 and 2 oclock the other was, since the distributor turns counterclockwise, I tried it and it pinged very bad, so I know that isn't right, the only place I can get it to fire is at 12 oclock @TDC or 1 oclock @TDC, but it lights up my headers as hot as a stove gets.

please help me I am stumped.
my uncle builds motors, and he said it sounds like the timing is retarded too much.
but he lives too far away to help me.
I should have just paid someone to do it.

my mods are in my sig if it matters.
and I used a brand new harmonic balancer, and checked the #1 cylinder without the spark plug to make sure it was on the compression stroke.
and when I put the cam in, I just lined up the dots.

damn this is driving me crazy as I only have about a month and a half to get ready for the track. this is my summer daily driver too.
any help would be appreciated
thanks

only difference is the cam, 24lb injectors, new timing chain, and balancer.

as long as the cam timing isnt off, id say your spark timing is to far retarded. my friend at the ford dealership said that when he "cheats" the smog machine for his friends, he puts the timing to TDC or about 5* retarded to help it pass. he said the engine when he does this will hardly run and after a few minutes the headers glow red hot. sounds like your problem. set the engine to TDC like your doing, start it up and advance the timing to 10* and let it idle and see if you get the same problem

I don't know where my distributor is supposed to point.
