Speedo Drive Gear (AOD to T5 Swap)

Hi Guys,

I am almost done swapping my transmission from an AOD to a T5 in my 93 convertible. I bought a 92 hardtop specifically to take the T5 out and put it in that convertible. I am also taking the AOD and putting it in that hardtop and then Im gonna sell it. Like I said I'm almost done and it was kinda fun to do. I'd do it again.

But anyway, I have 2.73 rearend gearing in the 92 hardtop (used to be the T5 tranny). I have 3.27 rear end gearing in the vert (which used to be auto). My question is, would it make much of a difference if I would get new speedo drive gears for each to correct the speedometer? Could I use the autos drive gear in the T5 and the T5's drive gear in the Auto? Probably not, right? I didnt try it yet.

By the way, 5.0L in both cars.

You're going to need a "Red" 21 tooth speedo gear for '92 T-5...

Thanks, Thats what I came up with too for 3.27 gearing and a 92 T5 WC. But what about the automatic with 2.73 gearing in the rear? I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

Would it be ok to just let the speedo gears in? There would be a little deviation, but not much, dont you think? Only .54 difference in the two rears.

It would be off a fair amount going from a 3.27 to a 2.73. Your for dealer should have the speedo gear for the automatic and the manual car.

2.73s use the yellow gear

18tooth for the 2.73

21 for the 3.27's

both those trannies are 8t drive gears, older t5's are 7t though

and the pitch of the teeth are different t5 to aod thats why they are not interchangeable

This is wierd..... I just pulled the driven gear out of the T5 tranny that used to be with 2.73 gearing, and its the red one with 21 teeth. I wonder if somebody changed the rear end at one point during its lifetime. Because the door label indicates 2.73, not 3.27. The tires are stock size too.

So basically it has a 21 tooth with 2.73 gears in the rear.

Im just going to jack the cars up and determine what rear each car has by rotating the tire and watching the driveshaft. They are both used, so they could have been changed without me knowing.
