Default Clearing codes????

I have a 91 Gt. What is the best way to clear the codes? my Chiltons manual says to disconnect the jumper wire while the codes are being displayed. I tried that and the codes are still there. Anyone had this trouble???

If the codes show up as "On Demand" codes (the first set of codes before the separator code)...... they are current codes = the failures are present and need to be fixed/corrected.
