Old or new, the screen does both....... prevent debris from reaching the sensor and correct/straighten airflow.

Removing the screen will introduce error into the MAF output calibration.

good luck,
My thoughts were kinda along with this guy..if the MAF is calibrated with the "obstruction"(screen)in place, and you remove it..the output will be wrong in some small percentage of error. How much is the real question...

Yep! Screens straighten airflow more than they block debris. Because as in most all mustangs, the intake piping has a bend in it. Any air flowing through a bend can and most of the time will become turbulent just after the bend. That is why the screen is used, it cleans up the turbulence and smoothes the flow.

Yep... and there are also flow directing vanes, flow enhancing vanes, etc, etc.... what do you think "clocking" the MAF achieves?

When you "clock" the MAF, you change the exposure location of the air flow reading section in the MAF bore. Like looking for the best shielding position from air "noise" or turbulence.... or a way to decrease, increase or stabilize the voltage signal output from the MAF to change the fuel trimming it causes.
