I upgraded my maf to a 70mm from a 95 and they have no screen, so it shouldn't matter.

cutting out the screen is an old school way of adding hp. they did it before there was a large selection of aftermarket mafs

The screen is used to 'straighten' the airflow before the sensor.
Removing the screen will introduce error into the MAF output calibration.
good luck,

i read in other threads that only on newer mustangs that screen in used to straighten' the airflow and on the old ones it was just there to stop big debris

On second thought... I don't care.
At least not enough to get into a pissing match over it...
If you believe it's there to stop large debris that magically gets past the air filter, then good for you.
I'm done.
good luck,

i had a sort of surging issue, cleaned my MAF, REMOVED THE SCREEN, cleaned IAC, and replaced O2, and it WENT AWAY.
no issues sence then, that was a year ago.....
