Default SROD question

I got that 82 GT Stang and its in really nice shape, and drives really good. The only problem I have is that 4th gear (overdrive) makes alot of noise under a load. It's like a really loud grinding noise that echoes thru the transmission tunnel.
When I let off of the gas it stops. I can shift from 3rd to 4th w/ out a clutch, so I'm assuming that the snychro's are ok.
Some guys say that all of those SROD's do that, and there's no real concern.
Any idea what could be causing the noise?

Was wondering if I should check the fluid, and if this takes gear oil, or ATF??

Do the T5's do this?
I'd really like to keep the 4 speed in it, but the noise is really annoying, and it's making me lean toward a T5 swap real soon.

t-5's nor should any tranny make such a horendous noise, it may have a bad surface on that gear, since the prob is only on one gear it would lead one to believe the prob is there

Yeah it is very bad sounding for sure.
I'd like to keep it in there, but I doubt that I'll find a rebuild kit for the SROD. Do you know if they make anything for them anymore?
Maybe I could put an ad up on here to try to find a replacement.

I have another Toploader 4 speed, but I'm not sure what all I would need for the swap.
Such as bell housing, clutch assembly (linkage or stock cable), driveshaft/crossmember.

Automatic is not even an option because I dont like them. Hahaha!

Would it be possible that the SROD is low on fluid? I'm being optimistic here, I know.
The pinion on the 7.5 is getting bad as well, so an 8.8 swap is coming soon. Hopefully before this thing decides to let me sit. (Should have a couple thousand left.) I've been short shifting and being nice to it.

Thanks for the reply!
I dont have many people to ask for advice on some of this stuff, so I really appreciate your time.
Thanks
