Portmaster. I dont know what you have against the GT-40P heads.. But a properly setup combo CAN make 300rwhp with them.
I don't have anything against them. It's a decent upgrade over an E7 or any production head before it. It's just I'm realistic. I've never had a GT40 headed N/A mustng on my chassis dyno that put out 300 at the wheels. Thats not to say it can't be done. Guys would keep bringing their cars in for the Sat Morning dyno special (3 pulls $50) and as many things as they tried with cam swaps, intake swaps it seems as though the average was about 260 for the good ones. I'm sure 300hp is real possible but the average guy isn't going to swap cams every other week to get it there. I just beleive in being very realistic and for 300 rwhp with a set of GT40p heads would inlolve some porting and a custom cam and a good intake.
so, riddle me this... what do you think it would take to get a set of stock GT-40 heads to make 250+ rwhp
be honest
With a Manual transmission and totally stock heads I would say
GT40p heads
Comp XE270HR
Edelbrock RPM air gap, Performer RPM, Crosswind, Steath
Holley 670 street avenger
long tube headers 2.5 inch exhaust.
For Fuel injection
GT40p heads
Comp XE264HR
Edelbrock Performer intake, Cobra, Explorer intake
24lb injectors and MAF
Long tubes into 2.5 inch exhaust
Keeping these combos in mind that PTV clearance issues with a stock shortblock, Compression ratio, the flow of the head and the best overall power within the limits of the heads. Going too big on the cam will cause PTV issues, hurt bottom end torque and overall power where the heads are capable. Keep the power range of the cam and intake where the heads work best will make the best over all power and torque. Peak numbers on a dyno isn't everything. Both combos should make 250 rwhp. The biggest thing is the big torque down low and thats where to use the power these combos would make.
My opinion is that people put way to much importance on peak hp numbers. It's just a math figure of Torque X RPM /5252. Make the torque where the heads shine and gear it right and it will run well. Try to make a killer hp number (for the heads) and you can kill off what really moves the car and that is torque.
