you need a cap and rotor for a up to 85 and for the carbed version, most likely you got the cap and rotor for the efi 85 -95, and yes in 85 they had cfi/efi and there is a difference in the rotor of the efi vs the carb one........need a pic to verify what you got, also you'll need the duraspark ign box and coil.

i got a summit racing SUM-850602 ignition box for it./.... but yes i got a 85-95 cap...dist adapter.....85 rotorbutton and distrib.......what timing chain cover and water pump should i use
I would do an early 302 MSD dist, 6AL box, external Holley f/p, stay with the stock serp belt setup if you have it. You don't have to change the timing cover. If you don't have one get one from Jegs they are cheap.

whats the point in msd for somewhat of a stock motor its not really beneficial
To eliminate the Ford ignition system. Duraspark, distributor fitment and so on.
Much easier to do an MSD dist, 6AL and coil. Bolt on and go. Plug and play. No special wiring/rewiring.
Are you running a mechanical F/P or electric?
