Default Still have questions?? Throttle body/Mass Air

I am new to this forum and haven't yet identified those few guys who really know their stuff like I have on the Jeep forum (84 CJ7 w/ 383 stroker). I have done the newbie due diligence of searching and reading past threads and still am not clear on what to do so I am going to put my own thread out there and see if the issue can be cleared up.

I have just purchased a 1990 Saleen with 36,000 miles and the only mods are BBK cold air intake, SS headers, flowmasters, MSD ignition and underdrive pulleys. I am trying to decide what throttle body/mass air to go with. I spoke to tech with BBK and they said 65mm throttle body and with stock intake no need to change out mass air. I read on here that mass air should be larger diameter than throttle body. Let's just use BBK's products as reference even though I know there are others out there. They have a 76mm mass air and I could go with a 70mm or 65mm throttle body w/ egr plate. I am not changing out intake or heads BTW. Does 70mm do nothing more than a 65mm on a stock intake/heads without air induction? Do I leave stock mass air on or will I see slight gain by changing it out?

Who can tell me the best scenario for my set up and thank you in advance for the wisdom on the forum.

Without changing your MAF there would be no point in changing the TB, the stock MAF is much more restrictive than the stock TB. Yes you are correct, the MAF should be slightly larger than the TB. If you don't have plans on doing any more to the engine, just stick with a 65mm TB and a 70mm MAF, if you have plans on doing some more in the future, go up to the 70mm TB and get a 73 or 76mm MAF.

Clear, concise and precise..... that's what I'm talking about. While I would love to make this car haul a??..... I think I am going to keep it pretty close to original since it is low miles and in showroom condition. Thanks for the clarification.

Would you mind clarifying why 70mm vs 65mm with stock intake and stock injectors and heads? This is where the confusion kicks in...... At what point do you get to the point of diminishing returns with larger throttle body and stock set up? I would assume that the amount of air is maximized at some point but don't know what point... Help me out here

I'm not sure what the stock intake throttle body opening is to offer a strong opinion on the size of the throttle body. However i do have a 76 C&L mass air flow and love it. Its also easily upgradable if you add more mods later down the road... the calibation tube for injector size are only like 26 bucks

its not going to matter from a 65 to 70 with a stock intake, although if in time u r going to change intakes it will help.

If you're keeping it a stock 5.0 you won't need more than a 65mm TB, and since I believe the stock fox MAF is 55mm you'll want to make sure your MAF is at least as large as your TB. If you're not going to upgrade the MAF don't bother changing the TB, and if you do get a MAF it's not a bad idea to stay away from C&L.
