I recently picked up an 86 GT, 5.0 w/od automatic. When bringing the car to a stop, the idle speed "hunts" and eventually stalls. Sometimes, if I quick shift to neutral I can keep it running. I have not had the opportunity to change the fuel filter yet, however I am not sold that the filter would be the problem as the situation does not happen all the time. There are times when the motor idles fine.
Any ideas??
Thanks,
RB

just had the same situation...check for vac leaks and clean iac like adder said. you might also want to clean out the egr valve and go ahead and get the new fuel filter and check timing.
i have the same problem with my 86 gt. i have removed the EGR valve and sealed off the hole. im thinking the next thing for me to do is remove the manifolds and replace the gaskets.
The IAC is the idle air control valve. It is located on the throttle body, looks like a cylinder, two bolts hold it to the TB, and it has one connector on it.
