Question Engine idle "hunts" and stalls............

I recently picked up an 86 GT, 5.0 w/od automatic. When bringing the car to a stop, the idle speed "hunts" and eventually stalls. Sometimes, if I quick shift to neutral I can keep it running. I have not had the opportunity to change the fuel filter yet, however I am not sold that the filter would be the problem as the situation does not happen all the time. There are times when the motor idles fine.
Any ideas??

Thanks,
RB

just had the same situation...check for vac leaks and clean iac like adder said. you might also want to clean out the egr valve and go ahead and get the new fuel filter and check timing.

Also check the EGR valve. If it is stuck open a little from carbon build-up, it will do that also.

Try disconnecting the battery. The computer will reset itself.

The IAC is the idle air control valve. It is located on the throttle body, looks like a cylinder, two bolts hold it to the TB, and it has one connector on it.
