Default popping noise, hesitation, maybe backfiring?

ok i searched first so dont flame me but it seems like there are two different kinds of popping being addressed, a misfire and a backfire.

my issue has gotten progressively worse over the course of the week. when i first start the car it idles ok and i can rev it no problems. however once under load it will pop a little and hesitate. these pops sound like theyre coming from the exhaust NOT the engine so this would be a backfire correct? usually after a couple of them it would go away and be a non issue either once the car warmed up or i was at a steady pace and then warmed up. however, tonight on my way home from school just a short trip it was popping and chugging badly and i could hardly get my speed up id let off down shift try and work my way up again and it was a nightmare. i guess tomorrow ill see how it went but i was wondering what would be causing this and how to fix it. its a 1990 5.0 lx. i was hoping to do a rebuild over the winter but that will rest upon if my parents will let me buy a winter beater. thanks for the help in advance.

Could be a misfiring plug. Yes, plugs, wires, cap and rotor are always a good place to start.

gregamuffin,

Wondering if you were able to locate the problem? I'm having same issues...hesitation and a corresponding popping noise. I've change and checked several things with no luck.

Try plugs first for sure. Make sure you gap the new ones correctly too.

TRY A FULL TUNE UP AND CLEAN THE MAF AND MAKE SURE THE TIMING IS SET

I bumped my timing to 14 and that seemed to do the trick. A full tune up is still in order but so far this has cured the 'morning sickness' popping. Good luck to the other guy with similar problems

You may need to run 91 octane to prevent detonation at 14 advance. I think stock was 8 w/o the vacuum advance connected. Refresh my memory, is the 90 a vacuum or electrical advance? Either way, your problem could lie there.

Well I don't have a stock cam I thought the stock timing was 10 anyway? Either way 14 seemed to solve my problems
