10 dollar t5 rebuild

My '84 GT w/t5 had the symptoms of a trannie going south. Missed shifts, refusal to go into gear, rattles, buzzes, and a noise that said "you don't want to be here" above 80 mph. And the shifter was like stirring a pot of stew. Turns out the shifter was missing plastic bushings in the shifter stick. The 2 bolts that hold it to the shift tower had tons of clearance. Put in the bushings, and it is a new transmission-shifts are "snick snick", and the trans quit all the noise! Maybe thats why Ford calls the bushings "isolators".<IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">

Did you do that? My bolts are "shouldered": fat shank, skinny thread area. Dunno if I can find any with a shank/thread combo to make it work. I don't want to bugger up the tower holes, and it looks too skinny for a larger hole to be drilled anyway. Who knows, maybe just weld up the holes in the stick, and re-drill, or try summin' like starter bushings in the holes.</P>
