Yeah, I have heard that some maaco jobs come out great, others not so great. I have also heard that if you slip the painter an extra 100 he will go the extra mile to do it right. Think that's a good idea?
forget the painter, a good paint job is all about the prep work

If I were going to do the prep work for the paint job, as mentioned earlier in the thread, what exactly would that entail?

^^ That is VERY true. Put it this way though, my car had a MAACO job (before I baught it) and I had paint all over my quarter window (the trim and the glass), all over the hatch, all over the windshield, on the door handles, etc. etc. Like I said, if you do it just make sure to tape everything off yourself.

make sure that the surface is smooth, and has no wax or any oil of any kind. A little filler is not bad, but it has to be paper thin. I have painted a couple of cars, and I have decided that I will no longer do it myself. Even brand new parts need prep work

It depends, I have seen them do good work. If you dont have the money to take it to a good shop it doesnt sound like you have much of a choice. Just cross your fingers and hope....

I considering doing the following...I sand the car and primer it and do all the prep work tape, get all the dents and such with bondo etc...and then just take the car over for paint....and after they spray it, take it home and wet sand and buff, What are the chances that it will turn out good?...well pending I do a good job on my part by doing good prep and taking my time.... what do you think...what would it run to just the car sprayed with like 2 base and 2 clear coats, that way Ill have room to work with on the wet sand, getting off orange peel and fish eyes....anyone have ideas?

Unless you have a hook up, you get what you pay for. W/ paint, that's not a good thing.

Maaco gets a bad name, but they do good work. The problem is, people take their cars there and want their cheap paint job and expect it to look and last like an expensive one. Maaco can cost as much as any other place if you want them to do it right, but most people don't want to spend the $.

Find someone to help you prep the car yourself and then shop around for some prices on paint and taping only.
