RPMs are so high!!
As I mentioned in my other post, I just got 3.55s installed today. I just now went out and beat on the car a bit. Wow!! Huge difference!! At any rate, I took the car on the highway, and at an indicated 70mph, it seems like I was awfully close to 3k rpms. Not only that, it felt like I was actually going faster than 70mph. I'm starting to wonder whether the shop installed the correct speedo gear. Anyway, my questions are:
1. Do these rpms seem normal for 3.55s?
2. I'm driving across the country in a few months. Can my 302 handle those rpms for 3k miles?

seems high to me, might have been good to wait till the road trip was over b4 doing the gears but with 3.55s it shouldnt be 3k rpm. how fast did it SEEM you were going?

do you have stock tires or are they lower profile? If they were lower profile than that would bump your rpms up fr the same speed, although that wouldnt explain you going 80 when speedo says 70 if you really were going 80. If your tires are stock 225/60 tahn i would think its the speedo gear but i would try and have someon drie next to you on the freeway and check to see if your speedo is right.

I have 4:10s in my 92 lx 5.0, I run at around 2900 at 70 mph with the speedo fixed. Maybe you got the wrong gears, when you got them did you look to see what the ratio was, it was stamped on the gear itself (ring gear I think). If you want to check and see what gears you have jack the back of the car up, leave in nuetral, put a valve stem on a tire at the 12:00(clock) position and then mark the driveshaft yoke with the diff housing. Than as a helper turns the tire 360 degrees watch how many times the driveshaft spins, if the mark on the driveshaft spins a little more than 4 times, chances are you have 4:10s or 4:11s. If it spins a little more than 3 times than you probably have what you paid for. Good luck.

That does seem high...I would do ^^^^ to see if you have the correct gears first. If you do, then it's probably the wrong speedo gear. 86-89 uses a different gear than the 90+ b/c the actual gear in the tranny is different (6 tooth instead of 7, I think...).
