RE: Sending Unit Install????
you definitely have to drop the tank:
-take out the three bolts than hold the filler tube in (behind gas cap)
-support the tank, and take the two bolts out that hold the straps up, they will hinge away from the tank
-slowly drop the tank and unclip the wiring harness from the plug ins on the sender
-once you get the tank on the ground, the sender is the one in the middle, tap the metal ring seal on the tabs with a screwdriver until you can take it off
-clean the surface where the sender sits in, there will be a oring gasket there, install the sender with a new gasket and tap the metal ring around until it stops
-hook everything back up and put the straps back on along with the filler tube
-pretty much all there is to it, its a relatively easy job, if your tank is empty!

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE! use a brass drift or brass hammer to loosen/tighten the ring so that nothing can create a spark and cause a big fire! even a hardwood dowel would be better than a screwdriver!

RE: Sending Unit Install????
probably could happen roundman, people say that a lot, but really if your pounding on it that hard to make a spark, you shouldnt be doing it! you just need to tap around it to get it loose, better safe than sorry, cheap way to do it is just put a towel or something around the screwdriver so there isnt any metal to metal going on. cheaper than buying something just for it.
