Default high mileage 5.0 coupe

I got my first stang in January Its a 1990 LX 5.0 coupe with an AOD.
The title says it had about 127,000 miles at 1997. now I was thinking of saving some $$ and getting the engine rebuilt and maybe selling it for another 5.0 with a 5-speed and build a weekend racer. or keeping the car i have and to T-5 swap. will the engine with that much miles on it handle some serious bolt-ons.
Please reply and tell me what you would do
thamk you for your time.

It should be o with 127k. But how well was the car handled before you bought it? If some dumb *** never changed the oil and didn't know squat about his car, its not a good idea to do that. Also, the t-5 swap works but its ghetto and Ive heard a few bad stories, I think you'd be better off selling that and buying a 5 spd coupe...

with that many miles on it I would rebuild it before I did any serious mods. when you rebuild, you can go with new pistons with larger valve reliefs so you can add a new hotter cam and heads with larger valves for more power. I prefer the AOD, so I don't know about switching to a 5 speed, seems like a lot of trouble just to have more trouble later.

Yea, I mean you not only have to change the trannies but you're starting a pedal short. Seems like to much work to me. The only times that seems to make sense is if someone's built up a car real nice; body, engine, everything then they decide they want a 5spd. Get it running/looking nice, sell it and get a manual.

Im going with roundman. I'd stick with the Auto and rebuild youre engine. Build it up and build up youre trans and rear end. Then go crazy!

I would just buy another block and start the build up while enjoying the car...if you like the stick it's not hard to change over...I like automatics as it's hard to out shift a machine when built right..a stall convertor and shift kits help out a ton..and with kevlar clutches and bands you can run the **** out of the trans if done right and it's earier on the drive train to boot than the stick..your 60ft time will drop as well..so don't pour $$$ into the car and then sell to move up..it makes cent$ to go with what ya got..

I would have to agree with vfast. Get a bare block and start from scratch. Enjoy the car you have. After the motor is ready, and you still want a 5-speed, sell the car and buy a 5-speed car. The Auto = consistency, so you really can't go wrong. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I love aode...... quick ace shifts...... If the car was taken care of and car is still running good Id say get all the miles you can outta that motor..... And Im sure it can handle some bolt on's..... And some bolt ons would help that motor out
Im running at 205k in my 95` and shes still running like a dream and I keep doing more mods to her and she just keeps running better.... But that car has been baby'd its whole life...
