thermostat?
Ok.....87 gt. Heat doesn't work and car has been running hot. I don't get heat until car runs hot for awhile. Is this a thermostat problem? I also hear what sounds like a fan (either bad or going bad) which appears to come from somewhere close to the interior dash.
Where do I begin?

+1 on either a thermostat problem, or air pocket in coolant. If I were you i'd drain you're radiator, flush it out with some fresh water, pour in some new coolant and then go with a mr gasket 195* thermostat.

RE: thermostat?
I like the cooler stat in the summer, factory is 195, I like to run 185. If you havent ever changed your stat and if you coolant level is good, change your stat and flush your cooling system.

RE: thermostat?
Thanks everyone....ok today I noticed that my coolant level is down so I am losing it somewhere. Still a themo. problem? I don't think I have changed it in a long time. I may change it anyway! How difficult is it to change? Keep in mind I'm a newbie to do it yourself stuff!

RE: thermostat?
If it's a stock radiator, there is a plug on the passenger side at the bottom, facing the engine. Just unscrew it (w/ your radiator cap off) and it should drain out. If you're losing coolant, you need to see where you're losing it....may be time for a new water pump....hopefully it's not a blown head gasket [<--you probably would have noticed performance problems and smoke in the exhaust if that was the case].

RE: thermostat?
When you have a blown head gasket the motor may hesitate b/c you're getting coolant in the cylinders, which is not combustible. The smoke may not be very strong, but it's grey/white and comes from the coolant that does burn off. If you aren't losing coolant anywhere visible, a head gasket may be a possibility. Check your oil to see if it's the right color. If it's milky, you definitely have a blown gasket.
