Why did you sell the 86 for an 85?

'85 is a step down. still a 5.0 but just not as powerful as an '86

85 is a step up, as long as you got the carb'd 5-speed. rated at 210hp, a simple carb/intake swap will get you a lot more. the 86, on the other hand, is rated at 205 and often puts out much less. the intake, heads, pistons are all crap

yea but its fuel injected, forged internals, higher compression, new heads, and more torque

plus the 86 has the 8.8" traction-lok rearend

yep, its fuel injection, of course the performance benefit from that is debatable in itself
the intake though similar to the newer design, has very tiny ports
the TB is a puny 58mm
85 had forged internals also
86 had new heads but they still sucked, not even as good as e7s - quote= "the high swirl combustion chambers are useless for performance and essentially render the heads junk." - william mathis, mustang performance handbook
compression was slightly higher, but the flat-top pistons were more of a henderance than an advantage
the 85 came with a 7.5 POS rear, so you've got me there.
also the 86 did have a better clutch
