A loud thump or knock when you step on it coming from the rear, shaking or vibration at freeway speeds while the steering wheel is rock solid and your butt doesn't have a wiggle (steering wheel vibration is the front tires need to be balance, shaking in your seat means it's the rear tires need balancing.

Thanks for the replies, folks. So these are my symptoms: First, when I am doing around 70 or so, I get his rhythmic vibration. It sounds kind of like vvvaaaavvvvaaaavvaaavvvaaav. It does it a little at cruise and on decel, but mostly on accel. As soon as I push in the clutch, it goes away. The steering wheel is rock solid--no vibrations. I can't really tell where I feel the vibration, or if I feel it at all. Maybe I'm just hearing it; although it seems like I'm feeling it somewhere. Second, if I am tooling through a parking lot, feathering the clutch at low speeds, sometimes when I push the clutch in, I get a reasonably loud thunk from somewhere. It only happens if I start to ease the clutch out, and then push it back in abruptly in first gear. Otherwise, the drivetrain never clunks--even when getting on and off the gas. Thanks again.

I had the same symtoms and it was a combo of bad u joints and a bolt missing from the rear yoke. It got so loose that I ended up snaping the front yoke and a u joint. Do yourself a huge favor and get under there and shake your drive shaft around to inspect. If its the u joints you can buy new ones heavy duty for like $20 each. and its not that hard to replace them.

Thanks for the replies folks. The shifter shakes, but no more than any other car I've driven. 5.0MPG, I've climber under there and tried to move my driveshaft in any direct, but couldn't. Will bad U-joints always cause the shaft to become loose?

[Jeff Foxworthy voice] If your driveshaft is resting on the ground, you may have a u-joint problem. [/Jeff Foxworthy voice]
