i read somewhere once that torque is the actual power the motor makes and hp tells how fast the motor makes torque

hp= torque x rpm / 5252
torque is defined as a force around a given point, applied at a radius from that point.
power is how much work can be done in an amount of time, so luckythirteen13 is right.
one horsepower is 33,000 footpounds of work done in a minute.
ok so if 100 lb ft of torque is applied to a rotating object at 2000 rpm, then it would be 100 x 2000 / 5252 which would be 38 hp.......
ok so now my head hurts really realy bad....but all in the name of helping others.....i need to take a nap now

These are the articles I always re-read, specially when dyno graphs are given to see how good/bad the numbers are...

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mhorsepower.html (good comparison using two engines tq/hp graphs)
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/horsepower.htm (more horsepower history)
http://science.howstuffworks.com/fpte5.htm (a dyno comparison beween a C-12 Caterpillar vs. Mustang Cobra engine)

Enjoy......

All you need to know is torque is what you need in the city and horsepower is what you need at the track. I personally likes a crap lot of torque (makes it funner to drive).

To put it very simply, torque is how much "PUSH" you have, hp is how much "POWER" you have. Torque gets you to your top speed, HP, determines your top speed.
