Advancing/retarding timing

Advancing/retarding timing
Would anyone be able to illustrate how to adjust the timing on a 1990 mustang 5.0? I have the haynes manual, but could not completely grasp the directions. I know its a simple task. I've just never done it. Thank you for your help in preventing me from damaging my engine ahead of time.

Here's an illustration.
Rotor turns counterclockwise as veiwed from above. Thus you would move clockwise to advance the timing, and counterclockwise to retard the timing. You must first loosten the bolt at the base of the distributer that holds a clamp that holds the distributer in place. Then you can move the distributer. Check the timing with a light and be sure to remove the spout connector to get a proper reading.
Make small moves when adjusting.

RE: Advancing/retarding timing
I have found timing for performance is not that simple!
Idle , Tps and Timing works together or against against one another! A 29 hp mistake in my case.
Before adjusting your timing you need to adjust your TPS AND Idle with car warm.
1.Disconnect the idle air motor on throttle body, Start the car, and adjust idle screw to perfect Idle
put key in on position, make sure your green tps wire is .99 Everyone say .98, i factor ir a.01 loss from wire to ecm, so .99 works perfect.
2. Turn off car, disconect dist spout, set timing. Most stock and mild modded 5.0's makes respectable WOT and Mid Curves 13* - 14* on dyno. My timing was set at 19* and turning it down to 14 and its chirps tires each shift and pulls you in your seat AOD tranny.
3. Make sure after timing your idle and tps are still in spec, and dont use the ground from TPS, use the alternator chassis.

RE: Advancing/retarding timing
I just advanced my timing on Friday. Not sure how much. My boss just turned the distributor, I drove it, it pinged, we moved it back some, and then I put some 93 octane in it and it works great.
