Default starter/flywheel problem

Ok guys the other day my starter started to grind when i turned the key, i replaced the starter and the car started fine about 5 or 6 times then all of the sudden it started to grind again, when i pop the clutch a little to get the engine to rock the flywheel a little bit the car starts right up and i have no problems. But if i try and turn the car off then on again it will grind until i rock the engine a little more, does anyone know what could be causing this annoying problem. I have a 95 cobra btw. and oh the car drives fine, i have inspected the flywheel and I did not see any "noticeable" wear.

Might be an incorrect starter or something not set right. If you can get under the car, take the starter off and turn the flywheel around and check the teeth and see what they look like.

you might need to shim the starter.

Mustangs (at least Foxes) have a retarded starter system. Shimming starters only makes them worse. The problem is that they are set just close enough so that if there is any wear, more problems are on the way. I had the same problem with my old 83. After replacing numerous starters, I decided to take a closer look. Sure enough, my flywheel had half of each tooth missing on the side closest to the starter.

Take out your starter, and use a flashlight to inspect the flywheel. If you still cant see the teeth, use your finger and feel for wear on them.

Good luck

Thats a good plan, but before you put the upgraded one in, check that flywheel.

Otherwise, your upgraded dollars are flushing down the drain.

yeah i inspected the flywheel it has a little wear, but nothing that should really effect the starter gripping the flywheel, but then again maybe mustangs are really sensative to that kind of thing, im not sure as i've never changed a flywheel in a stang before.

All it takes is a little nick, and then the nick corresponds to damage to your starter, which eventually fails.
