RE: Noisy speedometer cable - dont laugh
Yeah well I am a nice guy, he crashed my 91 Eclipse GSX, but he is paying me back. Hey as long as he fills it with gas it's fine. I don't mind working on cars and I happen to be working on his truck (electrical draw through chassis), perhaps something I caused when I installed an overhead display and a PS2, but I have rechecked and cut all that wiring I did, and it didn't change a damn thing so I abided to help him out get it fixed at his expense which should be just spotting a short, hopefully noticeable. Hes knows not to stomp on my GT, but I let him USE my lx when it is working.

Sounds very similar to a problem I had with my car...
A really weird noise kept occuring as I accelerated (louder and louder the faster and faster I went)
It didn't happen all the time, just some random times
The sound projected through the speaker though, and when I got my head unit installed, the guy told me the noise was common in later model Ford vehicles, called "Engine noise"
He said he might be able to stop it, might not...$100 dollars an hour, he would work max. for 3 hours, then give up, since it could such a variety of things
Luckily the 'engine noise' rarely ever occurs

If it's a faint tickinging noise that you can only hear with the radio off. Chances are it's the speedometer head, not the cable. I had a noise like that and since I'm **** about noises I replaced the gauge cluster and whalah. Quiet as a church mouse.

Cable or speedometer head. Simple. Unplug the cable from the transmission. If it's quiet, it's one of the two.
Plug it back in now disconnect the cable to speedometer. If it's quiet, it's the head. If it's still noisey, do I really have to explain this to you?
Anyways. I had a noisey speedometer head on an 88 Mustang before. I just went wild with the WD40 up behind the dash. Must have go lucky because it was quiet after that.
If it's the cable. You can pull the inner out of the cover. Clean it and smear grease along the whole length.
