Default 3000 rpm stall converter

What exactly is a stall converter? Is it the same as a torque converter? Someone told me to get one. They said 3000, but no less than 2800 and what is the best kind to get? This is new to me so I need to be filled in on what exactly this does and what I will get out of it.

i wouldnt bother with a 2500. remember that the number is just a guess. a low hp motor hooked to a 2500 stall will probably stall 2200-2300 at best.

if you do buy a converter, go with edge racing. they custom make you a converter according to your car, mods, and the type of driving you will be doing. down side is that an edge racing converter will set you back about $500

There's many other companies out there that will custom build you a stall but most of them are too damn expensive.
