Turned 200k recently, and within 300 miles the clutch cable snapped, frayed down near the fork. Replaced it with a beefy-looking cable from NAPA, no big deal and was working well - until 300 miles later at a stop light, when it wouldn't let me put it in gear while the engine was running.

I still have decent pedal feel, very much like the old one before it snapped, and good pedal return so I'm thinking it's not the new cable. The new cable tightened up the pedal feel and travel slightly but not dramatically. In the couple days before this current issue it was starting to feel looser, again very much like the old one before it broke, and I did pull up the pedal so it could adjust.

The clutch/flywheel were replaced 24k ago. I'll be able to diagnose tomorrow, checking cable travel at the fork and trying to get a look at the quadrant.

Is this just stock quadrant/pawl failure? I'd much rather just upgrade the quadrant and install a firewall adjuster than have to get back at the clutch...

By looser clutch feel I mean a bit spongy, as thought the cable was stretching slightly as I pushed it.

Hold the peddle to the floor with one hand and reach up with a screw driver or something and block the quadrant from moving then slowly lift up the pedal, you will hear it click. You only want about 2 clicks and it should take that last bit of slack out of the cable.

crawl under there and inspect the cable and clutch fork travel and report back at findings.

All it took was opening the hood - boy was I wrong about the NAPA cable, it didn't even last 300 miles. Blew out just past the bracket, and it was no closer to the header that the stock one.
I supposed now I'll get the MM package with the quadrant and adjuster.

Huh ? Good catch. What clutch are you running, a stock replacement or some "He Man" racing setup?

Stock replacement clutch from Advance - didn't have time to wait for an upgrade to ship out. Just bolt-on mods, doubt I'm anywhere near 300hp.

I'm looking at the MM kit and the Steeda kit from LMR, is the Steeda cable te same construction as the MM (which looks impressive)? At 200k I'll spend $50 to not have to do this again anytime soon...

I don't know the difference between the 2, as I'm still on the stock one in my car. I don't remember reading anything negative on either, but someone said a stock cable from Ford is a very good cable.
