Default Tapping Noise

Does anyone have any idea what a tapping noise from the engine could be?

It's a steady tap and when you rev up it gets faster and louder.

It could be where your valves are out of adjustment. You woould need to reset them.

Well I hope I am wrong but my 74 camaro has a very similar problem and I was told that a lifter had gone bad. It will sound about the same but it can't be fixed by adjusting the valves. I think they said that it flattened or something like that. My poor camaro has seen some hi revs so it wouldn't suprise me.

Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters?

Solid, your valves may need an adjustment (valves wear faster on solids).
Hydraulic may have some plugged lifters that need to be cleaned.

Hydraulic
then the holes in the lifters might be plugged..this causes the full force of the lifter to smack the push rod and slam the valve rocker..thus causing tap.

How old is the engine and what weight of oil do you use?

How's the oil psi? Did it just start out of the blue or after the rebuild? & did you rebuild it or a shop? That can be caused by pushrods, lifters, rockers or (hopefully not) a rod or piston. If it's been doing it since the rebuild it's likely all of the lifters & pushrods didn't go back in the hole they came out of. If that's the case the only way to fix it is buy new lifters, pushrods, or both.

thats funny, all these people rebuilding motors and not replacing lifters, the lifters make that sound, Nut may have come off or loosened off rocker .

Do this, get some kerosene and put it in your engine oil. A gallon will do, run car for 10 minutes high revs turn off, drain oil and filter. replace oil and filter, 5 w30 or 10w30 is ok.

most of the ones I seen had the little springs in them loose thier tension and dirt was not the cause,

If you cant compress the lifter by hand , replace
