Default having gas troubles

so i have an '87 2.3 auto converted to an '84 5.0 5-speed and after the conversion, my gas gauge i thought was off because I ran out of gas with it reading 1/4 tank. but when i filled up, i could only fit about 10 gals in. now it did the same and the gauge read 1/2 tank. so my question would be is the stock in tank fuel pump unable to keep up with the needs of a very mild built 5.0(idk if the fuel pumps were different between the 2.3 and 5.0) or is it somthing else, need help cause yes it is the begining of winter in wisconsin and i don't have a garage....oh yeh i am running with a stock carb

Im pretty sure Ive heard about guys running 4cyl pumps in conversions. I will have to ask my buddy at work tonight if his pump in his conversion is stock. He also runs a mildly built engine. GT-40 heads, CAM, Nice upper intake, exhaust, etc.

It sounds like there could be something wrong with your pick up where it's not reaching the bottem of the tank

there is a plastic cage in the bottom of the tank which holds the pickup and that may have broke loose and isn't allowing fuel to pickup.
