The balancer shows 10 ---- 0 ----- 10 ----- 20 -----30... I put it toward the 30 side... I don't know if the balancer could be off? But the marks on the balancer itself look perfect..

It has stock exhaust. I just did a tune up to it. And I did not hear any ping before I adjusted the timing...It's that mark at 0* that has me confused...

that mark at zero is the reference point. To make it easier, then you can put a white mark at the 10 degree too so that you know were you are when you advance it. That's how I do mine. My timming light allows me to use that zero mark to dial in the total number of degrees that I advanced it. Say if I advanced my timming 12 degrees, then I can set the dial on my timming light at 12 degrees and that would dial in zero on the balancer. Are you sure that your on number one cylinder? Belive it or not, I use to be in Chevy a lot and the first time that I did timming on the 5.0 I got the first cylinder wrong and it pinged like crazy.
