Which way does the front timing seal go on?

Which way does the front timing seal go on?
The book I'm reading says hammer it in from BEHIND the timing chain cover, but I kind of remember prying it out from the front? Anyone know? This is for a 1988 5.0.. Differently put, on which side of the timing chain cover is the giant flare for the seal? Thanks!
