Default hoses linked together?

When I bought this car I was concerned about getting it running and stopping the various leaks in the engine. Now that ive cured most of my leaks I was looking at cleaning up the engine a bit and found these two hoses linked together. Im not sure what purpose this servers hopefully the pics I am posting will give you all a good enough picture to help me out. The location is passenger side of the firewall where I have two open connections for these hoses to hook up to. Thanks in advance if you all can help.

it wont work, and you probably have a core change in your near future...good luck.
