Well your messing with the air flow so I would say the mass air meter was trying to adjust and it was to much! Stupid question? Why would you pull your air filter off with the car running?

if the MAF is exposed to the turbulant air from the fan
it will act real funny

Make sure the car is off when you take out the filter

The MAF cant get a good reading without the airbox so it freaks out. Thats why i wont use an open filter. Besides, better chance of ingesting hot air which doesnt make much power.
