Default Question on Engine V

Not that long ago I bought a 95 GT with about 120,000 miles. I noticed the engine got pretty rough at higher RPMs and I replaced the balancer. Initially it seemed a lot smoother but now I still think the engine seems pretty rough say above 4,500 RPM. It doesn't burn any oil, I've replaced the dist cap, coil, wires, fuel filter, etc. - it doesn't make any strang noises at idle or anywhere else.

Am I being paranoid? Is it just what a 5.0 feels like at higher revs after 120,000 miles? Could it be something else more serious? I don't have alot of experience with V8s - maybe I'm just paranoid.

I know the engine revs to about 6,000 but it feels like I'm torturing it about say 5,000. Up to 4,500 it seems really smooth.

It is the engine and not the driveline because it feels the same way in neutral w/o any load.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Default Question on Engine V

Why would the u joints be an issue when the engine is in neutral?

No, it's not the u-joints and no, your engine shouldn't change it's pattern after a certain RPM.....below 4500 or above it should feel the same just faster/louder/higher pitch but not vibration wise. My first thought was the H-balancer but you said you changed it.....and unless that one is not "balanced" then I can't think what it can be off the bat...

Check fuel pump, regulator, ....clean out your IAC motor.....have O2 sensor checked.....and make sure your timing hasn't gone due to the spout connector gone nutty. (that happened to me, computer thought it wasn't there)

Default Question on Engine V

I have this same issue in my 95 GT with 91K. I am going nuts trying to troubleshoot it. I've had lot of issues with it though. I replaced the U joints, new gears, just did the clutch. I have nasty vibrations at high RPms in park or in gear but it starts around 3K.

I have new engine mounts that I am going to install soon, they look like a few of the mounting bolts will be hard to get at, any tips?

I just checked the Harmonic Balancer last night and w/ cylinder 1 at TDC and distributor rotor pointing to plug #1 it aligns to 0 on the timing marks as it should. That means it hasn't skipped, do the balancers just go bad or loose weight or should my test signify the balancer is aligned properly. GRRR bucket of bolts, I want a smooth ride!

Something to consider is that some harmonic balancers are fluid filled. I don't know for sure on the 5.0 if that is the case, but look for leakage. Also if the car is an automatic, the front pump might be going out causing a vibration, but that is a long shot.
