I had a friend that had a 95 w/ 347 in it. And to pass emissions/noise restrictions,he put steel wool in there, maybe you can try that instead of your shirts.

I know you can light steel wool on fire if you hook it up to a battery, I dunno about hot exhaust gasses though.
