Need help to identify a 351w
Hey, i just want to know what the easiest way to identify a 351 from a 302. The reason is cuz i bought a 82 gt which used to belong to my uncle in early 90's then he sold it in 95'. in oct 06' I saw that car abandoned behind an old house and recognized it. The guy had purchased that car from another guy and had it parked since 2000. He claims he put a 351 in it but i dint really care what it had in it I just needed to have it. I runs but will lose oil pressure when its running for a while. I just want to make sure if its a 351 ill pull it out and build a 408 for my 87gt, and putmy 306 on my 82gt..

edit: but yea it would be on the left side under were the heads are connect to the block, but the supper easy way would be to take the intake manifold off and look in the center of the valley it will say 351w if its a 351windsor

Measuring things is the best way I can think of to tell.
The lower intake is wider.
The dist. will be longer/taller.
There may be some different casting symbols in the lifter valley, but I neve paid enough attention to small details like that.
After a while of comparing a 302 to 351w you will be able to tell just by looking at them. The proportions are slightly different.
(makes car shows more interesting).
I am a self proclaimed leg-humper of the 351w swap, so if I can help let me know. You may find some good swap info on my site.
Is the 408w going to be efi?

RE: Need help to identify a 351w
If you want to identify the 351 vs 302 all you have to do is look at the top of the water pump mounting point at the block. If it is a 302, the block deck height will end where the water pump bolts into place.
But if it is a 351 the deck height will be about an inch taller( between the top of the water pump and the bottom of the head.)

RE: Need help to identify a 351w
Hey thanks a lot ill have to check out that motor. 92boosted makes a little more sense cuz of the taller deck height, cuz I have a track heat intake for my 306 and before i put it on i tried on a spare set of 351 heads and it bolted right on as well as the long tubes for the 302 heads. Will it work if I take the F/I stuff from my 306 and swap it on to the 351 block??
