my old 5.0 was hitting the 200k mark, then the rest of the car burned down, now shes sitting in a driveway waiting for the opportunity to find a good home

if you want to rebuild it for performance then there is a thousand diff ways to go about it If i could do over i would get brand new better block than stock. If your worried about reliability of it becuase of milage, I wouldnt be too worried. I had 172K on my stock longblock and was running a dry shot of nitrous. Never blew the motor just blew a head gasket. These motors will last. As far as the fuel smell that could be something as simple as a bad spark tor dirty o2 sensor.
