I've heard of people using like .542's and such. You don't make power with lift, you make power with duration. If you have a maf car, i would recommend the 35-351-8 cam from comp. Its like 250 bucks but it will scream at about 3000. The 87 i had would come alive at three. I had 275 tires on the back, and when the cam hit 3k, it would break the tires loose going 30 mph or so down the road. All i had was gt40 heads and intake.... Good luck

The cam mfg should tell you with what combo the cam is good with. I think we had a thread similar to this and a couple of us agreed that the not to exceed is in the ballpark of .520-.540 and personally I think .540 is too much for stock springs over time they will have to get upgraded. Just my $.02

[sm=badidea.gif]...the use of stock springs with any other cam than the stock cam, that is. FYI....brand new stock springs bind (become solid) @.510" lift.....you should leave a .060" gap before binding, so that leaves a safe "working range" for a stock spring of only .450"....... http://www.cranecams.com/?show=faq&id=5

And again.....total valve lift does not cause PtV, there are other camshaft/valvetrain parameters that are the ones that affect PtV. Keep in mind that the only time when the piston and valves are very close are during the overlap cycle (both valves opened at the same time). You could have a .560" cam that will not cause PtV problems, and a .490" lift cam that will cause problems. X-303 cam user here, with 1.72 rockers (.583" lift) and stock shortblock for yrs. The valve lift = PtV problems equation is wrong.

.500/.500 is max on stock springs. they can exceed this but just slightly as stated above^^^ because they do require some kind of clearance. i had a diagram sent to me in a previous thread, i've asked this ? before. the only cam that really even works on stock spring is ford racing b303 cam, its just under the .500 lift and the trick flow one i believe works too
