Default Question on junkyard heads...

So once I finnally find a pair of gt-40s in a junk yard around here what process should i take to get the heads cleaned and performing best... I know a guy who can do a 5-angle valve job... What parts am i going to have to buy or am i going to be able to re-use. Im planning on getting 1.7 RRs anyways but for the valve job do i need to get new seats? Also to get the head cleaned should I take it to a shop and have it cooked or just clean it myself. And as far as checking for cracks is magnafuxing a expensive thing or even necissary?

do some shopping around for machine shops, ask for quotes. cleaning, magnaflux, everything you need for 2 heads should be around $800, toss in another 500 for the valve job

I would just get the heads milled down, get springs that match your cam and replace the valve seals and through them on. Getting them hot tanked shouldn't cost more then $100 if you want them really clean.

Most people get the heads milled .030-.040 from what I've seen. Getting new valve seats is going to be exspensive. If your going to do a complete rebuild of new heads your might as well just get a set of aluminum heads for a couple hundred more.
