Going from 3.08's to 3.55's WILL increase your top speed. A mustang with a stock motor and 3.08's can't run to redline in 5th gear... so that means you have RPM's that aren't being used. Switch to 3.55's and THEN you will be able toreach redline (or close to it) in 5th gear. Your top speedWILL be higher because you will be using all available RPM's from your motor. Putting in 3.73 gearsor lower will start to give you a slower top speed because you then run out of RPM's in 5th and thus a slower top speed.
How does this make any sense????

it does.....

say you have 2.73s, theorically you could have a top speed of say 220+mph but we know you'll never reach this speed since the engine wont rev to 5k in 5th at that speed(air resistance, mechanical limits etc.)

now with 3.73s you have a more obtainable speed of 160mph

Power is an issue here too... Most street cars don't have enough power to pull hard enough at high rpms to get a higher top speed. Technically, the top speed is actually faster than your can will need to run with stock suspension and tires. For example, a stock size tire on a 96-01 mustang with a t45 tranmission will run 166 mph is 5th gear at 6000 rpm.... However, most cars don't have the power or a straight stretch long enough to get their car to 6000 rpm in 5th gear. It comes down to having enough power to use the gear. A 4.10 gear will have enough top end for any daily driver, just revs the engine higher to gain those speeds.

Maybe in my 69 the aerodynamics would cause that to happen, But not on my SN95.
