Tricky question... The answer is yes. And no. Since you are running the same speed at a higher rpm with shorter gears, your theoretical top speed will decrease. However, a lot of the time with stock gears and a stock motor weight and wind resistance will prevent you from reaching your top speed. With new gears you might be able to go faster, but you'll be closer to your limit. So basically, yes, you go faster.

yea it will, it will limit ur top speed u wont be able to hit as fast as the stockers, but they are worth it, and really how much are u at the top end of ur car anyway?

yea instead of bein able to go 145 you will be able to go 140(just made up numbers, dunno ur stock or planed gears). my point is its a small differance, and theres no reason you should be going 140anyway

id say if u were into street racing keep ur stocks or maybe go to 3:27's....but if ur all about going from a dig get 3.55s or 3.73s.. i went from the stock 3.08's to 3.73's and i can def tell a different in launches but definetly tell a difference in loosing top end.

Going from 3.08's to 3.55's WILL increase your top speed. A mustang with a stock motor and 3.08's can't run to redline in 5th gear... so that means you have RPM's that aren't being used. Switch to 3.55's and THEN you will be able toreach redline (or close to it) in 5th gear. Your top speedWILL be higher because you will be using all available RPM's from your motor. Putting in 3.73 gearsor lower will start to give you a slower top speed because you then run out of RPM's in 5th and thus a slower top speed.

The basic answer is yes,but there is more to it than that. If you change your gears only, you will lose some top end speed.

Different tranny's have different OD ratio's, however, and can also affect your top speed. The T5 is .68 and my Zspec is .63, so I could have steeper gears than you and still have lower rpm's--hence, higher top speed. That is even more true w/ a tranny like the G-Force T5 (.59) or the Viper spec T56 (.50, or something low like that).

I think my 3.55s are perfect for the street and the track, it's an awesome all around gear and was definitely worth the switch.
