cleaning sludge and rust from an engine
ok i pulled my 302 from my 85 last weekend and there is ALOT of sludge in this thing it almost made me think it was unrebuildable but the cylinder walls are great. what would be the best way to get all that crap off without spending a fortune. Mabey filling a tub with heavy duty degreaser? and sandblasting the block and heads for the rust? or will the sand get into places that will be hard to get it out of and f-up the engine when i go to start it? help please.....

Take the block to an engine machine shop and have it tanked. This will remove everything bad.Sand blasting will require you to super clean everything and the chance of leaving something behind is great.
This isn't the place to skimp on cash outlay.Buying enough degreaser to do the job will cost quite a bit and trying to get into ALL the oil galleries would be difficult. There's also the question of where to get rid of the used chemicals. If you get caught disposing of hazmat improperly you will be in a lot of trouble. If it gets into a waterway you will be in even more.
The best way to do this is to take the engine to a good engine machine shop, have it tanked, bore the cylinders, and align bore/hone the crank and cam journals. After this is done you will have a pretty much new engine block to build as you see fit with no worries about what might break loose and ruin something expensive.

well couple hundred for the boring/honing/cleaning. plus rebuild kit-300, uper engine rebuild kit-300, new maniforld/ carb-600 and other little things, and the long block has a 60,000 mile warrenty but once again i dunno what one would be better
