Default best option for me???

Ok guys I just bought a 94 GT w/ 150k. It is in nearly perfect cosmetic condition. I bought the car because it was cheap and for the purpose of building her up. I bought it from a guy who just told me he thought that the timing chain was broken, and it wasnt running, so I picked it up cheap. All I had to do was put on a new Distributor cap and rotor, and she fired right up. Sounds great right???

No...turns out that sometihng is really wrong with the motor. All it does is run like crap and pore blue smoke out. It lopes like it has a HUGE cam in it (and it's stock), and smokes like a freight train. Guy I bought it from basically told me "tough shiit."

So here's the situation. Should I get a 306 or 331 next? I want a good DD car w/ a very mild cam. I have enough money to do h/c/i combo with a shortblock that I choose. Will a 331 really put out A LOT more power than a 331 with similiar other components? I can get a 306 shortblock for almost 1/2 of a 331 shortblock, so that why I want to know. Can a 306 with a good h/c/i combo, injectors, maf, etc produce 350rwhp?

Let me know what you guys think.

what would be a rough estimate of rwhp for a 306 w/ dished pistons, a good h/c/i combo, injectors, maf, exhaust, and a dyno tune?

I want to get dished just in case I get a FI system.

I would be curious to see if the timing is maybe REALLY far off... I accidentally set my timing by the wrong mark on my distributor and my car smoked like a bastard... then i saw what I did wrong and corrected it... now its fine

I wonder if the timing is off badly also. If you try and drive it it'll never spit and sputter like it's having a hard time running, it just runs really poorly. The best way I can explain it is that it's the worst miss I've ever seen in a car. I wonder if the timing chain is actually messed up???

The blue smoke I would associate with oil consumption, which I dont know why it would be burning oil if the timing was off...maybe I am completely dumb though...?

Let me know what you all think.

A 306 producing 350rwhp on a basic h/c/i setup???? Ehhhh I would say no if your going to be running stock compression (or close to it). But you can certainly get it close! Why dont you just do a 306/h/c/i and than spray a 100 shot on it. Say hello to low 400rwhp!

might be a bad injector dumping tons of fuel in one hole
what does exhuast smell like?

to get 350rwhp you will need an s/c
new 306 with H/C/I and s/c will make around 400rwhp

the smoke is thick and smells terrible, sometimes it smells like fuel, sometimes it just smells...bad. The smoke is very strong and will make your eyes water in a heart beat.

Do you all think my shortblock is fried?

Before you pitch that possibly good 302 I would reset the timing, check your plugs(they could be ancient) and just spend a little time and TLC with it...

How much did you pick it up for if you dont mind my asking
