magnafluxing checks it for cracks, and hot tanking it just cleans it up they let it bath in caustic soda, which eats everything off the block except the metal
magnafulxing utilizes small metal particles which are poured over the head and block surfaces, and then you use this big "u" shaped electro magnet to excite the metal particles and look for crack outlines.
the tool he used is called an AC yoke coil, I do this as my job.

and if you really want to get technical, it doesnt "excite" the particles, it mearly uses the magnetism created by the yoke, to bridge the particles over a crack

magnetism will take the path of least resistance and if there is a crack, the magnetism will go around the crack anduse the metal powder to bridge across it

I have one pic of a crack found on the front of a front end loader, but its hard to tell whats going on, anyways heres the pic

The machine I do business with charges $25.00 to magnaflux a block and $25.00 for one and $44.00 for a pair of heads. Hottanking a block runs $50.00 and I dont rememeber but I believe its close to $50.00 for cleaning a pair of heads. I'd never consider building an engine without having the parts Im going to reuse like block, crank, heads, rods, etc cleaned and magnaflux inspectedby my machinest.

A true 'hot-tank' is caustic acid and it will get everythin cleaner than new.
It also eats the cam bushings so be ready for the shop to install new ones if the block is good at all.
Not horrible expensive. last one I had done were about $65 parts/labor.........
