RE: 2 step
I believe a 2-step revlimiter is first stepyou can set it to say 5000rpm for launches as soon as the first step is hit, it kickes to the second automatically, and the second step would be set for your shifting. It would be mainly for consistant launchesso every launch is 5000rpm.

RE: 2 step
let me explain since no one has got it right yet.
a two step is used for automatic cars with a trans brake when launching. lets say a car has a converter stall speed of 4000rpms. after the burn out the car rolls to the light. when both cars stage, the car with the 2 step presses his trans brake which also turns on the 2 step. the 2 step is usually set around 500rpms below the converter speed. so when the button is pressed the driver floors it. the motor wont move because its on the trans brake. the rpms will quickly jump to 3500 and then the rev limiter will slow it down. the motor will bounce of the rev limiter (3500) as long as the button is held. when the light turns green (or just before) the driver releases the trans brake and the car is free to move and the motor is free to rev all the way up. basically allows you to launch your car at wot and all you have to do is release a button.
i have a 2 step on my car for my new combo. should be fun

RE: 2 step
A 2-step is not exclussive to auto tranny cars with a transbrake.....you could also set it in a manual tranny setup with a line-lock, activate it with a push button while clutch pedal is down, and release line-lock & 1st. step rev-limiter when you let go the clutch pedal......check the information at http://www.msdignition.com/rpm_6.htm

RE: 2 step
depends on what your using it for. if your using the 2 step with your line lock then its a good thing to have because it will keep you from over reving the motor when your doing your burnout. if you have an aod, youll need a transbrake vavle body to use a 2 step for launch. if you have a manual you could set up the 2 stage to be active when the clutch is pushed in that way you can set the rpms to whatever you want to launch at and hold the throttle wide open and youll always launch at what the rpm is set to.
long story short, depends on how you use it

RE: 2 step
BUT,
If you are using a C4 you could wire it thru the brake lite switch and use the low RPM adjustable mod that MSD makes and launch off the 2 step without a trans brake.
I do.
Also lotsa NHRA stockers do this too..........
