with my old motor i was buring oil badd an had low compression i replaced my guide seals compression went up an didn't smoke anymore
Again, the guide seals have nothing to do with compression, it must have been somthing different you were doing while checking it. It will on the other hand help with the smoke on start up.

how much oil do I put in the spark plug hole to complete this test? Other than that do I complete it the same way as I would without the oil?

I would guess a little bit, 1oz or so maybe, dont hold me against this thugh, and like he said about what a Haynes manual says, 7 strokes, dont just get the numbers from one stroke, which im sure you didnt though, but good luck, i agree alos with what others^ say about vavle guides-they shouldne make you burn oil, just rings and seats......

I am just confused on exactly how I track the problem so I can pinpoint specificallywhats wrong. If its the rings I need to start an enginebuild. If its the heads I need to order heads. Spring is coming QUICK! thanks for all your help guys!

A good 302 hits 130-160. I have over 100K miles on mine and it hit 160 on all eight in three or less strokes. Your motor is shot. Typically less than 100psi wont hit at idle. The smoke likely indicates an issue with the bottom end, but a wet test is not the most accurate way to find your compression loss. Too much oil andyou will seal a valve. Wet tests are for people without the proper tools. You need to put compressed air in each cylinder when at TDC and listen for where the air is going. Some will natually leak past the rings. What is considered too much will require a bit of "feel" or at least some experience. You can use a rubber glove on the throttle body and tailpipe to identify a valve loss if it is not easily heard. Removal of your rocker arms may yield an upper valvetrain issue. I have seen engines that had bent rocker arms or broken valvesprings cause leakage. The likelihood of this being the case for you is pretty slim considering what cylinders are affected. Leakage test all the way, but regardless of where the leakage may be coming from - you will need a new bottom end or heads. Personally, I would just rebuild the motor and not try to "band-aid" your low compression on all eight.
