what would a compression test show me? how much about would they cost and where would i go to get one? it runs fine normally.would that solve why im loosing coolant and my engine heats up?

compression test will tell you the condition of the internals of the engine

first of all. before you do anything.. get rid of those stock gauges. they lie. i had a similar problem you're describing although it worked out alrite for me. i had an exhaust leak, with a leaking water pump gasket, and a leaking oil pressure sending unit. my car was smoking because as i was driving the coolant would find its way into my exhaust. with the oil leaking out the sender, if i got on it good it would smoke and smell like oil. my stock gauge said temp was WAY below what it actually was. reading probably 160 on the stock gauge.. more like 200 on the autometer (fully warm)

My first guess is bhg, do to the loss of coolant, could you smell the coolant in the air when it was smoking?

and 93lxfiveo how did you go about fixing the coolant that leaked into ur exhaust? cuz i just replaced the waterpump like a month ago and the thermostat too.

my h-pipe had cracks in it so i just upgraded to an off-road h-pipe heh

if you put your hand over ur exhaust and smell ur hand, does it smell sweet?

i live in MA too.. just a bit aways from the cape.i can look your car if you'd like. my shop is in Seabrook, NH which is about 2 miles from the MA/NH border.

sorry, bhg means Blow Head Gasket. I think if you may want to drain the oil and see what it looks like.

its time for an oil change n e ways so i will do that prob the next warm day that i have time.

and 93lxfive0 i live in the new bedford area (mattapoisett or no. dartmouth) how can you tell if the oil pressure sending unit is leaking? cuz if thats the oil prob then that would be a nice fix for that. ill look into the problem a little more w/ my father soon he was a forman at 'ohara chev for like 20 years. til it went out of bussiness but the funny thing about that is he drove an f-150 to work everyday and refused to drive a chevy lol. but n e ways thanx for the offer and ill get back at you if we cant figure it out.


oh and i hope its not the head gasket cuz i wouldnt want to replace that then have to replace it again when i get heads.. ugh but if it was the head gasket wouldnt it smoke like a b!tch all the time?

im thinkin its a BHG to or partly blow one, when you change the oil look coolant of milky substance and if you got the tool you can get a leak down kit and do it yourself the kit is like 90 bucks, then all you need is air

if steam is coming out of your tailpipe its the head gasket and for the black smoke your most likely running rich like skyler said check your oil
