Default Longevity?

Looking to buy a fox body mustang. The two I'm looking at are both 5.0's. One is a 89 vert with 87k miles. The other is an 88 hatch with 120k miles. Wonder how long would the 88 last as apposed to the 89. Ive been told you should have the ones with over 100k miles rebuilt. Dont know how much that would be, or how well anyone local could do it.

I have previously owned a 2.3l that was rebuilt(motor had 80k from rebuild, and about 160k on chasis), it lasted about 6 years with basic matainance(checking fluids changing them, and the air filter).

Any info would be great thatnks.

most 5.0s will reach 200k without major problems, but thats around the point when they need a rebuild

Thanks, one more question to anyone out there. The 89 is from a dealer, while the 88 is from a private party. The dealer one looks better,(i havent seen under the hood of either). Which would ya assume is better? there is a considerable difference in price. the vert being 150percent the price of the hatch.

+1 on the 200k mile mark and then some with proper maintenance. You should be good with either car. All depends on what model you want.

My vert has over 340K with the motor being rebuilt just because it was out of the car and had over 200K on it so I thought I might as well. Same tranny and all.
