help installing my AFR heads
I am installing my new heads and in the Ford Racing Gasket kit I received what looks to be 2 of the same head gaskets. When I put 1 of the heads on the gasket said front and all went on correct. Now on the second gasket the only way for it to say front is if I flip the gasket upside down (because it has to fit the over the head Dowel) Is this okay if the gasket is upside down. Also any other information will be appreciated. I am redoing the whole top end with.

RE: help installing my AFR heads
Yeah, one flips... Make sure the front is on the front on both sides.... A lot of people get mixed up and put them on the same way so that stripes match and that makes them backwards.... Make sure you torque them down accurately... 25,50,70 then 80 on the intake side... Or just 80 all the way around if you are using good head bolts or studs... I'd go with ARP... They are cheap insurance... Its a good idea to torque the intake bolts also... Also, in my opinion, i would throw away the gaskets for the front and back of the intake and use a bead of silicone... Good luck

RE: help installing my AFR heads
torque sequence ------------
| 9 5 1 3 7 |
| 10 6 2 4 8 |
------------
Step 1: Torque in sequence 55-60 Ft/Lbs
Step 2: Torque in sequence 65-72 Ft/Lbs
Recheck final torque in sequence
*** CAUTION ***
engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that
permanently stretch during the initial installation.
New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is
replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.
go slow, and dont forget to put some rtv on the headbolts and lower intake manifold bolts
that travel through water passages.

RE: help installing my AFR heads
Thanks for the answers. I am using the ARP bolts. 1 more question in my AFR manual it says that after 2-3 hours of running the engine to re torque the heads. Is this really needed? If so I am not looking forward to taking apart the engine again to torq the bolt.

you shouldnt have to, should only have to if the gaskets call for it. if you wanna be sure though, you can recheck one of the bolts near the exhaust (cause you can reach em) and just see - that should give you piece of mind of your worried.
also yeah make sure you use thread sealant on the head bolts and any intakes that go into water (if they do on those heads). RTV/Permatex will work, but teflon thread paste is better - like this...
permatex makes it too, and should be found at any auto parts store. its basically pipe dope but better
