Default AOD problem, HELP!

so until this 5.0, i had never driven an auto before, so the complete workings of an auto transmissionare foreign to me.

anyways, in regular drive, it goes through 1st and 2nd gears fine, and 3rd all the way up to like, 2000 RPM's. then, the RPM's skyrocket and the car does not advance. just like i put it in neutral. every now and then it will kick in if i go fairly high in the RPM range, but i'm scared to do this too much.

funny thing is, in over-drive, all gears work fine.
this a computer problem?

car's a '92 5.0 LX conv if that matters

Sounds like your tranny is on it's way out. What color is the tranny fluid, what does it smell like?
